Pre-Conference

Pre-conference Workshop (9:00am – 4:15pm, May 3rd, 2012) Library Services to Seniors and People with Disabilities

Where: University of Regina, Dr. John Archer Library (room LY 107.24 & 28) See MAP

People with disabilities live in all parts of Saskatchewan, and use all of our libraries:  students with learning disabilities; seniors with mobility issues; people of all ages who find it difficult to read small print, or who get their reading material in a different format such as audiobook or e-text.

In the morning sessions, the CNIB (Canadian National Institute for the Blind) will talk about how libraries can make our services relevant to people with visual disabilities, and the Learning Disabilities Association of Saskatchewan (LDAS) will help us better understand learning disabilities and what we can do to serve people with learning disabilities.

In the second part of the day, we will break into two groups:  there will be a public libraries group focus, and there will be a college/university group for staff who work in post-secondary institutions.  Each group will focus on issues in their own sectors, and on the needs of their clientele.

Staff from Outreach Services at Regina Public Library and Saskatoon Public

Library will talk about some of their successful programs for seniors and people with disabilities, both inside and outside of the Library, to support lifelong learning and community participation.  After that, the public libraries roundtable – with opportunities to join by telephone from across the Province – will include a comparison of service models for home delivery and service to seniors’ residences, a session on downloadable Library2Go e-books and audiobooks, and a sharing of information and experiences related to serving people with disabilities in our new province-wide environment.

The college/university section will include a presentation by staff from the University of Regina’s Disability Resource Office, followed by a panel-led discussion and sharing of service models at the province’s three largest post-secondary institutions.

* Please note that attendance at the Preconference Workshop is not included in the general conference registration fee. You must specify on your registration form that you wish to attend and there is a $50 ($65 for non-SLA members) fee (lunch included) for the day.

All Preconference registrants will attend T1 in the morning, and then choose between T2 and T3 for the afternoon.
